As the player populations in these games can reach millions, social and psychological issues have risen into important role in theire research. This chapter introduced Richard Bartle's four category classfication of MUD players, as well as the more recent work by Nicholas Yee in surveying the behaviour and attitudes of players in virtual worlds. Some researchers emphasize the continuum between real-world social life and that in virtual worlds, whereas others have emphasized that the distance and difference of these world is important for them to function in their role as site for experiments of identity and exploring an alternative social reality.
